March 19, 2010 Orlando Florida- Gorham based R.J. Grondin & Sons received national recognition for their safety achievements, winning Associated General Contractors of America’s Construction Safety Award in their division. AGC America reviewed applicants from across the nation for the annual safety awards. AGC applies tough standards during the process including a short presentation to a panel of the country’s premier safety experts. The award was presented in Orlando, Florida at the national convention.
“R.J. Grondin & Sons achievement is a result of a serious approach to safety. While they may have not anticipated such a level of adornment for their success, it really was no surprise. AGC Maine watches their safety program producing results and often refers to their efforts as an example of construction excellence,” said John O’Dea CEO of AGC Maine.
R.J. Grondin & Sons completed three and one half years without a loss time injury entering 2010. While that sounds significant, the number of hours worked without an injury exceeds 990,000 hours.
“The employees at our company have so much pride in their work and our safety program. Everyone works hard to reduce risks and watch out for each other…we are anxious, but focused to reach one million hours and beyond,” said Kevin Murphy, Safety & Human Resources Director.
R.J. Grondin & Sons continues to update their training programs and safety procedures as advancements in the industry occur. Members of the team recently attended newly released trenching & excavation training and overhead energized line training.
Safety Director Kevin Murphy and Ken Grondin accepted the award on behalf of the company. “It was a great feeling to accept the award on the stage in front of 1,500 of my peers on behalf of the employees at R.J. Grondin & Sons. This award says one thing to me, everyone at our company cares about safety and views it as priority #1 in the workplace,” Kevin stated.
R. J. Grondin & Sons is a third generation, family owned earth-moving business located in Gorham, Maine, with operations in Southern and Central Maine. The company, which was once a successful dairy farm business in the 1950s, has evolved into one of the premier construction companies in Northern New England.

SAN DIEGO, CA – Members of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Maine traveled to the west coast to join their colleagues from across the country in recognizing National Safety Excellence Award Winner – R. J. Grondin and Sons of Gorham, Maine. The 20th annual Excellence in Construction and National Safety Excellence awards recognized the nation’s safest construction firms in 2009 with a celebration at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel in San Diego, CA on February 4. Maine Chapter member R. J. Grondin and Sons of Gorham, Maine received the Merit Award for Safety Excellence in the Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction category. Robert J. Grondin, III and Kevin Murphy accepted the award.
ABC member firms achieving Platinum status in ABC’s Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) program are eligible to compete. Selection criteria for the national safety winners included each member’s self-evaluation scores, lost workday case rates, total recordable rates, and interviews conducted by members of ABC National’s Environment, Health and Safety Committee.
R. J. Grondin and Sons is nearing 1 million hours without a reportable lost time injury in this, their 51st year in operation. The company is a 3rd generation, family-owned earth-moving business with operations in Southern and Central Maine.
